Collaborative learning with AI through structured exchange

Kollaboratives Lernen mit KI im strukturierten Austausch

AI2Schools · 4th AI mini project
Teacher Workshop, Warsaw · 21 September 2026

AI2Schools

The problem we started from

  • Students find asking an AI more comfortable than asking peers1
  • Help-seeking becomes isolated — peer interaction declines2, 3
  • Yet curricula list collaboration as a disposition to be practised4
AI is not the problem. Losing the conversation around it is.

The idea

AI as a starting point —
not as the answer.

  • Learners work with AI individually, on different material
  • Then they explain it to each other in a tandem
  • Explaining an AI's answer forces you to think differently than just reading it1
  • And knowing you will have to explain changes how you work with the AI from the start2

1 Chi & Wylie (2014), Educational Psychologist 49(4) — ICAP: different forms of engagement trigger different cognitive processes · 2 Fiorella & Mayer (2013), Contemp. Educ. Psychol. 38(4) — the expectation of having to teach already changes how one learns

Five steps — as a student

1Lobby — everyone joins with a password, no account. Groups A and B are assigned automatically.
2Work phase (8–20 min) — A and B individually work on their group's material, with an AI chatbot of choice.
3A explains to B (8–10 min) Peer exchange
4B explains to A (8–10 min)
5Reflection in plenary — optional questionnaire.

4B erklärt A (8–10 Min)
5Reflexion im Plenum — optionaler Fragebogen.

What the teacher prepares

  • One topic, two material sets — A and B, deliberately different
  • Material can be text, image, code or file
  • Optional hints per group, timers per phase
  • That is all — no installation, no accounts for learners
Design rule: the task must stay challenging for learners and be solvable by common AI tools. Too easy → nothing left to explain.

Was die Lehrkraft vorbereitet

Any subject, any level

  • Subject-independent — the material defines the content
  • STEAM and beyond: languages, ethics, social studies
  • Three levels of depth, set by the teacher through material choice:
Beginner
factual questions, guided prompts
Advanced
comparison, open questions
In-depth
source criticism, synthesis

Jedes Fach, jede Stufe

Einstieg
Faktenfragen, geführte Prompts
Fortgeschritten
Vergleich, offene Fragen
Vertiefung
Quellenkritik, Synthese

What just happened

  • Jigsaw — only the knowledge gap makes the exchange necessary1
  • Learning by teaching — everyone had to explain once2
  • ICAP — dialogue is interactive, the highest level of engagement3
  • Structure matters — free-form exchange does not reliably achieve this4
  • AI as object — in the work phase a tool, in the tandem an object of scrutiny5

Was gerade passiert ist

  • Jigsaw — erst der Wissensunterschied macht den Austausch nötig1
  • Learning by teaching — jede Person musste einmal erklären2

ICAP — four modes of engagement

Learning outcomes rise from bottom to top. The mode is defined by what learners do, not by the method's label.

IInteractivedialogue in which both sides build on each otherexplaining to a partner — and being questioned
CConstructiveproducing something that goes beyond the materialsummarising in own words, asking the AI follow-ups
AActivemanipulating the materialhighlighting, copying, repeating
PPassivereceiving onlyreading, listening, watching
In TandemLab: the work phase is constructive, the tandem phase is interactive. Reading an AI answer alone would stay passive.

ICAP — vier Stufen kognitiver Beteiligung

AActivedas Material bearbeitenmarkieren, abschreiben, wiederholen
PPassivenur aufnehmenlesen, zuhören, zuschauen
Im TandemLab: Die Arbeitsphase ist constructive, die Tandem-Phase interactive. Eine KI-Antwort allein zu lesen bliebe passive.

Two scenarios — pick one

Same two-layer model of AI bias, two different subjects. We run both in parallel.

Scenario 1
Image AI

How AI images are made — and why they are never neutral.

Computer Science · ages 14–18

Scenario 2
Text AI

Genes, environment and the invisible rules of the machine.

Biology · ages 14–18

Two sessions run at the same time. Choose the one closer to your teaching — press ↓ for details.

Zwei Szenarien — eines auswählen

Dasselbe Zwei-Ebenen-Modell des KI-Bias, zwei verschiedene Fächer. Wir führen beide parallel durch.

Szenario 1
Bild-KI

Biologie · 14–18 Jahre

Beide Sessions laufen gleichzeitig. Wählt, was näher an eurem Unterricht liegt — Details mit ↓.

Scenario 1 — Image AI

The classic test („a doctor“) no longer works reliably1. Bias moved to a second, invisible layer — and from the finished image you cannot tell which layer acted.

Group A — Prompt rewriting

GPT-4 rewrites every prompt before it reaches the image model. Documented by the provider — and not switchable.

Group B — Diversity rule

A system layer adds origin and gender when the prompt omits them. Gemini, Feb 2024: the rule fired where it must not2.

1 Weinmann, Messingschlager & Appel (2026), New Media & Society — 1,344 images, prompt „a competent person“ · 2 Google, official statement of 23 February 2024

Szenario 1 — Bild-KI

Gruppe A — Prompt-Umschreibung

Putting it together — Scenario 1

Fill in the pipeline — in your own words, from both halves:

1
User input
(prompt)
2

4
Diversity
rule
5
Output

dashed border = only kicks in sometimes

1
Nutzereingabe
(Prompt)
2
Prompt-
Umschreibung
3

modell
4
Diversitäts-
Regel
5
Ausgabe
an Nutzer:in

gestrichelter Rahmen = greift nur manchmal ein

Scenario 2 — Text AI

Pairs ask a chatbot why some people become aggressive — and sort the answer into four categories of causal attribution: genes only, environment only, both side by side, or genuine interaction1.

Group A — The open answer

A real chatbot reply on aggression. Layer 1: what the training data carries — and why that is not automatically biased.

Group B — The refusal

The same system refuses to link crime to a religious group genetically. Layer 2: an invisible provider rule users cannot switch off.

Worksheets 1–3 · 45–90 min · needs nothing but a chatbot

⬇ Download material (EN, PDF)

Szenario 2 — Text-KI

Gruppe A — Die offene Antwort

Additional material

What we already found in the trial

Summer term 2026 — introductory programming, students without a CS background

  • They could describe problems and patterns — but lacked the technical terms
  • Compared to earlier cohorts: better at presenting code and explaining structure
  • Unchanged at explaining syntactic detail
  • Participants named the exchange with their partner as the highlight
Hardest part for us: designing tasks that are hard for humans and solvable by AI.

Zusatzmaterial

Additional material

Data protection

  • No accounts, no e-mail addresses — a name and a password suffice
  • Evaluation is optional and declining has no consequences
  • Self-generated pseudonym code — reconstructable by the learner, not identifiable by us1
  • Audio recording only with separate consent after listening
  • Servers in the EU, operated by us

Zusatzmaterial

Datenschutz
